Cooking Class in a 100 year old Kampong House on Pulau Ubin

This exciting hands-on class is conducted in a real kampong house on Pulau Ubin. Participants will be taught to make traditional Malay dishes. One of the dish to be taught will be Nasi Kerabu that uses not so common herbs often called ‘jungle herbs’ by the Malays. Herbs such as Daun Teh, Daun Belingau, Daun Puchat Chemparai, Daun Tengeh are just some of these herbs found on the island. Before the start of the cooking class, participants will be go harvest some of these herbs in the surrounding garden.

Pulau Ubin may be one of the last islands off Singapore that still has a very small kampong community. But the population has dwindled from 3000 people who lived there 20 years ago to only 60 people now. It still feels like Singapore in the 1960's with a laid back lifestyle.

To get to the island, we take a bumboat from Changi Jetty. It is a 10 mins ride. From the jetty on the island we take a stroll to the kampong house that belongs to Samsiah and Kamariah's family who were born and brought up in the house.
